The Hamburg-Kiel connection gives you the opportunity to discover Germany's North and all ist aspects which would be first of all not Bier and Bratwurst but WATER! You'll start of in KIEL where the sea reaches into the heart of the city/ not only on the map but emotionally, too. The largest slice of nature in Kiel is the Firth for residents of Kiel, the maritime view of the city with harbour facilities, the huge ferries and giant portal cranes on the dock side is the best expression of their special feeling of living and belonging here. Kiel, the capital of the state in Schleswig-Holstein with around 240 000 inhabitants, is a traditional maritime and naval city. It has a lively students scene (round about 30000 students living in Kiel) and urban charm. With the fresh Kiel air in their noses and the typical sound of the harbour in their ears, the people of Kiel enjoy the advantages of a green city with their own parks, ferries and beaches. Kiel was chosen twice (in 1936, 1972) to host the Olympic sailing competitions and the University of Kiel got ist own sailing centre. Change your perspective and get to know Kiel's wonderful environment while sailing on the Baltic Sea or going by boat on the Firth to one of the small Fischer villages. Also a trip to LàœBECK, an old trading city, dating back to the middle ages is included in this week. To appropriately finish this first part and to get you ready for Germany's northernmost metropole Hamburg we'll celebrate the "High Noon" of our SU on SYLT, Germany's most favourite island in the North Sea. You cannot find better beaches than there in Germany (and have wilder beach parties :) Off you go to HAMBURG, having the second biggest harbour in Europe which has truly determined the city's face. You will see all the parts of Hamburg connected to the harbour, i.e. the main bar street in Hamburg: the Reeperbahn and afterwards the Fischmarkt, selling everything early in the morning. We'll have barbeques on the beach of the river Elbe with view of the so called "industryromance" = the harbour at night; or in Hamburg's many parks which make it a very green city. Also you can take you beer in our freaky Student quarter the Schanze. As far as further sights are concerned there are to mention Hamburg's landmark the Michel, the Dom (big fair), Planten un Blomen, the lake Alster in the middle of the city and its many canals, connecting the park with the city center. Finally, not to forget any contents on our port, you'll learn about the huge economical impact the harbour has and we'll discuss in which way a harbour-city like Hamburg benefits from the European Union (enlargement). | Ideal Participant: | . Wanted: people who are serious, ordinary, punctual, without any humour. NOOOOOOOOO! Just kidding! But of course you should be interested in the "real" german culture and language. And you have to be punctual on the first day to arrive, not to miss anything. Sleep long enough before coming. Any allergy against beer and Bratwurst may cause health problems. . . |
